달이 떠오르는 모습을 본 적 있는가? 보름에 가까운 달이 서서히 지평선 위로 떠오르는 모습은 아주 인상적이다. 2013년 초 뉴질랜드 웰링턴(Wellington) 빅토리아산 (Mount Victoria Lookout)으로 떠오른 달의 모습은 아주 멋진 장면이었다. 이 장면을 찍기 위해, 사진작가는 부지런히 자리를 잡고 달이 곧 모습을 드러낼 방향을 향해 약 2 km 뒤에 카메라를 설치하고 기다렸다. 이건 여러 장 사진을 찍어서 빠르게 돌린 타임랩스 영상이 아니라, 실제 시간이 흘러가는대로의 모습이다. 새벽녘 지구의 가장 큰 위성 달의 위용을 바라보며, 빅토리아 산에 올랐던 사람들은 달빛에 자신의 몸을 맡겼다. 달은 매일 밤 떠오르기에, 당신도 달이 떠오르는 모습을 감상하는 것은 어렵지 않다. 매일 햇빛이 사라지고 낮이 끝나가면, 그 뒤를 이어 약 50분 동안 달이 떠오르며, 보름달의 경우 해가 지는 순간 반대편에서 떠오른다. 보름달이 지구에 아주 가까워서 여느때보다 달이 더 커보이는 슈퍼문이였던 이날 화요일, 해가 지던 순간, 달이 떠오르는 모습을 제대로 만끽할 수 있었다. Explanation: Have you ever watched the Moon rise? The slow rise of a nearly full moon over a clear horizon can be an impressive sight. One impressive moonrise was imaged in early 2013 over Mount Victoria Lookout in Wellington, New Zealand. With detailed planning, an industrious astrophotographer placed a camera about two kilometers away and pointed it across the lookout to where the Moon would surely soon be making its nightly debut. The above single shot sequence is unedited and shown in real time — it is not a time lapse. People on Mount Victoria Lookout can be seen insilhouette themselves admiring the dawn of Earth’s largest satellite. Seeing a moonrise yourself is not difficult: it happens every day, although only half the time at night. Each day the Moon rises about fifty minutes later than the previous day, with a full moon always rising at sunset. A good time to see a moonrise will occur at sunset on Tuesday as the Moon‘s relative closeness to Earth during a full phase — called a supermoon — will cause it to appear slightly larger and brighter than usual.
