은하, 별 그리고 이들을 비추는 청명한 연못이 함께 어우러져 기억에 남을만한 하늘과 지표면의 경치를 만들었다. 보여지는 전경은 지난 달 칠레의 북쪽에 위치한 살라르데아타카마 (Salar de Atacama) 솔트 플랫 (바닷물의 증발로 침전된 염분으로 뒤덮인 평지)에서 찍은 12개의 모자이크 사진들로부터 얻을 수 있었다. 라구나 세자르 (Laguna Cejar)는 중심에 큰 싱크홀 (sinkhole)을 가지고 있는 소금호수이다. 사진 왼쪽에는 천체사진작가의 약혼녀가 같은 장면을 사진에 담기위해 노력하는 모습이 보인다. 수 많은 별들과 왼편의 두 은하 (대 마젤란과 소 마젤란 은하) 그리고 오른쪽 대각선으로 뻗어있는 우리은하 (Milky Way galaxy)로 인해 밤하늘이 빛나고 있다. 마치 우리은하의 모습이 지평선에선 엉망인 것 같지만 사실 근처 마을에서 나온 불빛 때문에 그렇게 보이는 것일 뿐이다.
Explanation: Galaxies, stars, and a serene reflecting pool combine to create this memorable land and skyscape. The featured panorama is a 12-image mosaic taken last month from the Salar de Atacama salt flat in northern Chile. The calm water is Laguna Cejar, a salty lagoon featuring a large centralsinkhole. On the image left, the astrophotographer’s fiancee is seen capturing the same photogenic scene. The night sky is lit up with countless stars, the Large and Small Magellanic Cloud galaxies on the left, and the band of our Milky Way galaxy running diagonally up the right. The Milky Way may appear to be causing havoc at the horizon, but those are just the normal lights of a nearby town.
