나선은하 NGC 2841(Spiral Galaxy NGC 2841)
겨우 4600만 광년 거리에 있는 나선 은하는 지구의 밤하늘에서 큰곰자리 방향에서 찾을 수 있다. 망원경으로 담은 이 선명한 사진 가운데 아름다운 섬 우주가 우리은하 속 뾰족하게 빛나는 배경 별과 더 먼 배경 은하들과 함께 담겼다. 이 사진은 기울어진 은하 원반 속 NGC 2841의 밝은 핵 그리고 더 어두운 외곽도 담고있다. 먼지 띠, 작은 별 탄생 지역, 그리고 어린 성단들이 은하의 휘감긴 나선팔을 따라 놓여있다. 이와 달리 많은 나선 은하들은 더 느슨하게 휘감긴 나선팔과 거대한 별 탄생 지역을 갖고 있다. Explanation: A mere 46 million light-years distant, spiral galaxy NGC 2841 can be found in planet Earth’s night sky toward the northern constellation of Ursa Major. This sharp image centered on the gorgeous island universe also captures spiky foreground Milky Way stars and more distant background galaxies within the same telescopic field of view. It shows off the bright nucleus of NGC 2841, along with its inclined galactic disk, and faint outer regions. Dust lanes, small star-forming regions, and young star clusters are embedded in the galaxy’s patchy, tightly wound spiral arms. In contrast, many other spirals exhibit broader, sweeping arms with large star-forming regions. NGC 2841 has a diameter of over 150,000 light-years, making it even larger than our own Milky Way. X-ray images suggest that extreme outflows from giant stars and stellar explosions create plumes of hot gas extending into a halo around NGC 2841.
