날개에서 본 행성 (Planets on the Wing)

곧 밝은 목성과 어두운 화성을 이른 아침 하늘을 좇는 이들이 하늘에서 쉽게 찾을 수 있다. 1월 7일 새벽이 오기 전 맨눈으로 볼 수 있는 두 행성이 고작 1/4도 거리를 두고 동쪽 새벽녘 하늘 지평선 근처에서 가까이 만났다. 이 크기는 보름달의 시직경의 절반 정도다. 1월 5일 이른 아침 하늘을 나는 비행기의 날개 너머로 목성 (왼쪽)과 화성 (가운데) 그리고 물병자리의 알파 별 주벤엘게누비 (오른쪽)가 나란히 이어져 있다. 그 아래에는 유럽 중부 체코 프라하의 도시 불빛이 펼쳐져있다.

Explanation: Lately, bright Jupiter and fainter Mars have been easy to spot for early morning skygazers. Before dawn on January 7 the two naked-eye planets will reach a close conjunction near the horizon, only 1/4 degree apart in predawn eastern skies. That apparent separation corresponds to about half the angular diameter of a Full Moon. Just off the wing of a high-flying aircraft in this snapshot from early morning January 5, Jupiter (left) and Mars (middle) are also lined-up with the well-balanced Zubenelgenubi (right), alpha star of the constellation Libra.
