남쪽왕관자리의 별과 먼지(Stars and Dust Across Corona Australis)

남쪽 왕관자리의 북쪽 가장자리 근처에서 망원경으로 빽빽한 별들 사이로 이어진 우주 먼지의 모습을 담았다. 500광년 보다 가까운 거리에 떨어진 먼지 구름이 효과적으로 더 먼 우리 은하 속 배경 별들의 빛을 가로막고 있다. 사진의 위에서 아래까지 약 2도 즉 구름까지의 거리를 감안하면 15 광년이 넘는 영역을 담고 있다. 오른쪽 위에 있는 사랑스러운 반사 성운들 NGC 6726, 6727, 6729, 그리고 IC 4812를 볼 수 있다. 독특한 푸른 빛은 우주 먼지에 의해 별빛이 반사되면서 만들어진다. 이 먼지들은 이 영역에서 태어나는 별들도 가리고 있다. 작고 푸른 반사 성운 NGC 6729 바로 위에 어린 변광성 남쪽 왕관자리 R이 먼지에 에워싸여있다. 그 오른쪽에 있는 붉은 아치와 고리는 새로 태어난 강한 에너지의 별에서 만들어지는 허빅 아로 천체다. 거대한 구상성단 NGC 6723은 사진의 왼쪽 아래에 있다. Explanation: Cosmic dust clouds cross a rich field of stars in this telescopic vista near the northern boundary of Corona Australis, the Southern Crown. Less than 500 light-years away the dust clouds effectively block light from more distant background stars in the Milky Way. Top to bottom the frame spans about 2 degrees or over 15 light-years at the clouds’ estimated distance. At top right is a group of lovely reflection nebulae cataloged as NGC 6726, 6727, 6729, and IC 4812. A characteristic blue color is produced as light from hot stars is reflected by the cosmic dust. The dust also obscures from view stars in the region still in the process of formation. Just above the bluish reflection nebulae a smaller NGC 6729 surrounds young variable star R Coronae Australis. To its right are telltale reddish arcs and loops identified as Herbig Haro objects associated with energetic newborn stars. Magnificent globular star cluster NGC 6723 is at bottom left in the frame. Though NGC 6723 appears to be part of the group, its ancient stars actually lie nearly 30,000 light-years away, far beyond the young stars of the Corona Australis dust clouds.
