대적점 근처 목성 곁을 날아가며(A Flight over Jupiter Near the Great Red Spot)

태양계에서 가장 오래되고 가장 거대한 태풍의 모습을 보고 싶은가? 5분 길이의 위 영상에는 마지막 2분 12초 동안 목성의 대적점의 모습이 담겨있다. 대적점에 다다르기 전까지 목성의 뿌연 구름층 위에서 계속해서 시야가 변하는 동안 영상을 더 제대로 즐기기 위해서 조명을 끄고 볼륨을 높이고 있을 것이다. 위 영상은 지난 7월 우리 태양계에서 가장 거대한 행성 곁을 지나가는 로봇 주노 탐사선으로 찍은 41장의 사진으로 만들었다. 이 타임-랩스 시퀀스는 실제로는 4시간 넘게 걸렸다. 2016년 목성에 도착한 이후, 주노가 이룬 수많은 발견들 중에는 예상치 못했던 깊은 대기 제트류, 지금껏 기록된 가장 강력한 오로라, 그리고 목성의 적도 부근에 모여있는 물을 머금은 구름들이 있다.

In the featured video, Jupiter’s Great Red Spot finally makes its appearance 2 minutes and 12 seconds into the 5-minute video. Before it arrives, you may find it pleasing to enjoy the continually changing view of the seemingly serene clouds of Jupiter, possibly with your lights low and sound up. The 41 frames that compose the video were captured in June as the robotic Juno spacecraft was making a close pass over our Solar System‘s largest planet. The time-lapse sequence actually occurred over four hours. Since arriving at Jupiter in 2016, Juno‘s numerous discoveries have included unexpectedly deep atmospheric jet streams, the most powerful auroras ever recorded, and water-bearing clouds bunched near Jupiter’s equator.
