독수리 성운 속 먼지 조각이 불려날아가고 있다. 강력한 별빛으로 인해 이 차가운 우주 산이 불려나가면서, 신화 속 괴물 같은 모습을 하고 있는 사진 속 조각상 같은 먼지 기둥만 남았다. 여기 담겨있는 것은 독수리 성운 속 몇 가지 환상적인 먼지 기둥 중 하나로 거대한 외계 요정으로 묘사되곤 한다. 이 요정은 하지만 10 광년 길이이고 일반적인 불보다 훨씬 뜨거운 복사를 방출하고 있다. 더 거대한 독수리 성운 M16은 사실 현재 산개 성단이 태어나고 있는 환상적인 별 탄생 지역으로 채워진 채 뜨겁게 달궈져있는 공동 안에 존재하는 거대하게 불려나가고 있는 가스와 먼지 껍질이다. 약 7,000 광년 거리에 있는 이 거대한 기둥은 앞으로 약 100,000 년 안에 완전히 불려날아갈 것이다. 위 사진은 지구 궤도를 돌고 있는 허블 우주 망원경으로 촬영해서 과학적으로 색을 다시 입힌 것이다.

Explanation: The dust sculptures of the Eagle Nebula are evaporating. As powerful starlight whittles away these cool cosmic mountains, the statuesque pillars that remain might be imagined as mythical beasts. Featured here is one of several striking dust pillars of the Eagle Nebula that might be described as a gigantic alien fairy. This fairy, however, is ten light years tall and spews radiation much hotter than common fire. The greater Eagle Nebula, M16, is actually a giant evaporating shell of gas and dust inside of which is a growing cavity filled with a spectacular stellar nursery currently forming an open cluster of stars. This great pillar, which is about 7,000 light years away, will likely evaporate away in about 100,000 years.
