돛자리 분자 구름 산맥을 따라 이어진 NGC 2626(NGC 2626 along the Vela Molecular Ridge)

이 알록달록한 우주 캔버스 중심에 있는 NGC 2626는 아름답고 밝고 푸른 반사 성운으로 우리은하 남쪽에 자리한다. 거대한 수소 II 영역 RCW 27에서 방출되는 붉은 수소 방출선으로 둘러싸인 채 빛을 가리는 먼지 구름 바로 옆에 있으며 돛자리 분자 구름 산맥으로 알려진 먼지로 자욱한 분자 구름의 복합체 안에 있다. NGC 2626 자체는 성운 속에 포함되어 있는 뜨겁고 어린 별에서 방출되는 빛이 성간 먼지에 의해 반사되며 푸른 빛으로 빛나는 반사 성운이다. 하지만 천문학적 탐사를 통해 이 별 탄생 지역 속 또다른 많은 어린 별들과 성운들이 연관되어있다는 것이 밝혀졌다. Explanation: Centered in this colorful cosmic canvas, NGC 2626 is a beautiful, bright, blue reflection nebula in the southern Milky Way. Next to an obscuring dust cloud and surrounded by reddish hydrogen emission from large H II region RCW 27 it lies within a complex of dusty molecular clouds known as the Vela Molecular Ridge. NGC 2626 is itself a cloud of interstellar dust reflecting blue light from the young hot embedded star visible within the nebula. But astronomical explorations reveal many other young stars and associated nebulae in the star-forming region. NGC 2626 is about 3,200 light-years away. At that distance this telescopic field of view would span about 30 light-years along the Vela Molecular Ridge.
