떠오르는 월식 (Moonrise Eclipse)

이 사진은 인도의 눈 내린 히말라야 산맥의 높은 트리술 정상을 향해 바라보며 멀리 지평선 근처 하늘의 모습을 담은 사진이다. 1월 31일 원격으로 촬영한 이 사진 속 오른쪽 위에는 밝은 별 프로키온도 함께 자리하고 있다. 지구의 그림자에 가려지면서 개기 월식을 기다리고 있는 불그스름한 달이 저녁 하늘에 떠올랐다. 행성의 밤 쪽을 가로질러 지나가면서 월식을 만끽한 달은 올해 달을 관측하는 이들을 위한 선물이라도 되는 듯이 2018년 찾아오는 개기 월식 두 번 중 첫 번째 개기 월식이었다. 이 개기 월식으로 가려진 달은 지구 주변에서 가장 가까운 궤도에 위치하는 근지점 주변에 있었고, 블루문으로 불리는 이번 달 두 번째 보름달이기도 했다. 2018년 7월 27일이 되면 이번에는 거의 원지점 근처에서 한 번 더 개기 월식을 만날 수 있다.
Explanation: This atmospheric picture of a distant horizon looks toward the tall Trisul peaks of India’s snowy Himalayan mountains. Taken from a remote location on January 31, bright star Procyon shines at the upper right. The red Moon rising is gliding through Earth’s shadow during the evening’s much anticipated total lunar eclipse. Enjoyed across the planet’s night side, the eclipse was the first of two total lunar eclipses in 2018, kicking off a good year for moonwatchers. But this was a rare treat. The eclipsed Moon also loomed large near perigee, the closest point in its orbit, during the second Full Moon of the month, also known as a Blue Moon. For the July 27, 2018 total lunar eclipse, the Full Moon will be very near apogee.
