두배로, 고통과 고난을 두배로. 불을 지피고, 가마솥을 끓여라 … 아마도 맥베스는 마녀 머리 성운을 노래하고 있는 것일까. 그 이름에 걸맞게 생긴 이 반사 성운은 약 800 광년 거리에 놓여 우주를 수놓고 있다. 이 섬뜩한 얼굴은 화면의 오른쪽 가장자리에 놓여있는 오리온자리의 밝은 별 리겔을 향하고 있다. 공식적으로는 IC 2118라 불리는 성간 구름은 약 70 광년 너비에 먼지와 가스로 뒤덮여, 리겔의 밝은 별빛을 받아 반사하고 있다. 이 완성된 사진에서 성운의 색깔은 푸르른 별빛 뿐 아니라 붉은 빛 보다는 푸른 빛을 더 잘 산란시키는 먼지 입자에 의해 형성된 빛깔이다. 이와 비슷한 물리적 현상으로, 지구 대기를 이루고 있는 질소와 산소 분자에 의해 지구의 대기가 낮 동안 푸르게 보인다.

A suggestively shaped reflection nebula, this cosmic crone is about 800 light-years away though. Its frightening visage seems to glare toward nearby bright star Rigel in Orion, just off the right edge of this frame. More formally known as IC 2118, the interstellar cloud of dust and gas is nearly 70 light-years across, its dust grains reflecting Rigel’s starlight. In this composite portrait, the nebula’s color is caused not only by the star’s intense bluish light but because the dust grains scatter blue light more efficiently than red. The same physical process causes Earth’s daytime sky to appear blue, although the scatterers in planet Earth’s atmosphere are molecules of nitrogen and oxygen.
