가장 밝은 별 이름을 알고 있는가? 이름을 갖고 있는 별들 중에는 문자가 쓰이기 시작할 즈음에 이름이 붙은 오래된 것도 있다. 많은 문화에서 밝은 별들은 각자 문화적 또는 역사적으로 중요한 이름을 갖고 있다. 전세계의 명확한 의사 소통을 위해 국제 천문 연맹 (IAU)은 별의 이름을 표준화하기 시작했다. 실제 색깔로 표현된 위 그림에는 현재 사람 눈으로 볼 수 있는 밤하늘에서 가장 밝은 25개의 별들이 IAU에서 붙인 이름과 함께 있다. 몇몇 별들의 이름은 흥미로운 의미를 갖고 있다. 시리우스 (라틴어로 “폭염”), 베가 (아랍어로 “낙하”), 그리고 안타레스 (그리스어로 “화성의 경쟁자”). 이 별들의 이름 중 몇개는 낯설 수 있지만, 북극성처럼 아주 친숙한 이름의 별은 이 목록에 올리기에는 너무 어둡다.

Many world cultures have their own names for the brightest stars, and it is culturally and historically important to remember them. In the interest of clear global communication, however, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) has begun to designate standardized star names. Featured above in true color are the 25 brightest stars in the night sky, currently as seen by humans, coupled with their IAU-recognized names. Some star names have interesting meanings, including Sirius (“the scorcher” in Latin), Vega (“falling” in Arabic), and Antares (“rival to Mars” in Greek). It’s also likely that other of these bright star names are not familiar to you, even though familiar Polaris is too dim to make this list.
