성간 먼지와 달아오른 수소 가스의 붓으로 그려진 아름다운 하늘의 장관이 우리은하 원반을 가로지르는 백조자리와 거대한 먼지 산맥의 북쪽 가장자리 근처에 펼쳐져있다. 22장의 다른 사진과 180시간이 넘는 전체 데이터를 활용해서 만든 이 넓은 시야의 모자이크 장면은 하늘에서 약 24도 가량 너비의 영역을 담고 있다. 백조자리의 알파별, 밝고 뜨거운 초거성 데네브는 가운데 위 근처에 자리하고 있다. 별과 밝은 가스 구름으로 가득 채워져있는 백조자리는 어둡게 빛을 가린 채 데네브에서 사진의 가운데 쪽으로 펼쳐져있는 북쪽 석탄 자루 성운도 함께 품고 있다. 데네브 바로 왼쪽의 별 탄생 지역 NGC 7000과 IC 5070, 북아메리카 성운과 펠리칸 성운은 붉은 빛으로 채워져있다. 베일 성운은 화면 가운데 아래 쪽에 자리하고 있다. 초신성 잔해인 이 베일은 약 1,400 광년 거리에 떨어져 있으며 그 외 다른 성운과 성단들도 확인할 수 있다. 데네브 자체는 북반구의 하늘 덕후들에게 북쪽 십자가의 가장 높은 별과 여름철 삼각형의 꼭지점으로 두 가지 별자리를 이루는 별로 잘 알려져 있다.

과 Explanation: In brush strokes of interstellar dust and glowing hydrogen gas, this beautiful skyscape is painted across the plane of our Milky Way Galaxy near the northern end of the Great Rift and the constellation Cygnus the Swan. Composed using 22 different images and over 180 hours of image data, the widefield mosaic spans an impressive 24 degrees across the sky. Alpha star of Cygnus, bright, hot, supergiant Deneb lies near top center. Crowded with stars and luminous gas clouds Cygnus is also home to the dark, obscuring Northern Coal Sack Nebula, extending from Deneb toward the center of the view. The reddish glow of star forming regions NGC 7000 and IC 5070, the North America Nebula and Pelican Nebulas, are just left of Deneb. The Veil Nebula is a standout below and left of center. A supernova remnant, the Veil is some 1,400 light years away, but many other nebulae and star clusters are identifiable throughout the cosmic scene. Of course, Deneb itself is also known to northern hemisphere skygazers for its place in two asterisms — marking the top of the Northern Cross and a vertex of the Summer Triangle.
