베누의 돌멩이들 (Boulders on Bennu)

OSIRIS-REx 탐사선으로 아주 가까이 접근해 찍은 소행성 101955 베누의 극적인 표면에 아주 많은 돌멩이들이 널브러져 있다. 3월 28일 고작 3.4 km (2.1 마일) 거리를 두고 약 50 m 의 영역을 촬영했고 사진의 오른쪽 위에 있는 밝은 색깔의 돌멩이는 4.8 m 크기다. 이건 돌무더기가 뭉쳐있는 커다란 역암 같은 소행성이다. 베누 자체는 500 m 크기보다 작다. 이는 엠파이어 스테이트 빌딩의 높이 정도다. 2018년 12월 도착해 지구 근처 소행성의 지도를 그리는 OSIRIS-REx 미션은 2020년 7월 TAG (터치-앤드-고) 매뉴버를 통해 베누의 거친 표면의 샘플을 얻어 2023년 9월 지구로 귀환하는 미션이다. 시민 과학자들은 샘플을 선별하는 컬랙션 사이트를 방문해볼 수 있다.

Explanation: An abundance of boulders litters the surface asteroid 101955 Bennuin this dramatic close-up from the OSIRIS-REx spacecraft. Taken on March 28 from a distance of just 3.4 kilometers (2.1 miles) the field of view is about 50 meters across while the light colored boulder at top right is 4.8 meters tall. Likely a loose conglomerate rubble pile asteroid, Bennu itselfspans less than 500 meters. That’s about the height of the Empire State Building. Mapping the near Earthasteroid since the spacecraft’s arrival in December of 2018, the OSIRIS-REx missionplans a TAG (Touch-and-Go) maneuver for July 2020 to sample Bennu’s rugged surface, returning the sample to planet Earth in September 2023. Citizen scientists have been invited to help choose the sample collection site.
