성운으로 가득한 궁수자리 방향으로 약 5,500 광년 거리에는 메시에 17로 알려진 별 공장에서 항성풍과 복사 에너지에 의해 조각된 모습이 남아있다. 이 거리에서 약 1/3도 가량 시야에 들어오는 이 천체는 실제로 30 광년이 넘는 크기에 펼쳐져있다. 이 선명하고 알록달록한 합성 사진은 뒤의 우리은하 중심의 별들을 배경으로 펼쳐진 이 지역의 가스와 먼지 구름들의 모습을 잘 보여주고 있다. M17에서 형성된 뜨겁고 무거운 별에서 나오는 항성풍과 강한 빛 에너지는 그 주변의 우주 먼지와 가스들을 천천히 쓸어내며 성간 공간에 둥글게 파인 모습의 들쭉날쭉한 형체를 남겼다. 한편 M17은 백조 성운 또는 오메가 성운으로 잘 알려져있다.
Explanation: Sculpted by stellar winds and radiation, the star factory known as Messier 17 lies some 5,500 light-years away in the nebula-rich constellation Sagittarius. At that distance, this 1/3 degree wide field of view spans over 30 light-years. The sharp composite, color image, highlights faint details of the region’s gas and dust clouds against a backdrop of central Milky Way stars. Stellar winds and energetic light from hot, massive stars formed from M17 stock of cosmic gas and dust have slowly carved away at the remaining interstellar material producing the cavernous appearance and undulating shapes. M17 is also known as the Omega Nebula or the Swan Nebula.
