별 먼지와 혜성 꼬리(Stardust and Comet Tails)

12월 19일 태양에 가장 가까워지는 근일점을 향해 가고 있는 혜성 C/2017 K2 (PanSTARRS)는 행성 지구에서 전갈자리 쪽 하늘을 망원경을 바라보면 볼 수 있다. 8월 18일 촬영한 사진 속 이 혜성은 현재 녹색의 코마를 내뿜고 있으며, 긴 먼지 꼬리와 짧은 이온 꼬리가 함께 담겨있다. 2×3도 너비의 장면 속에 푸른 별빛을 반사하고 있는 먼지로 자욱한 반사 성운 IC 4592이 있다. 푸른 말머리 성운으로도 알려진 IC 4592는 약 400 광년 거리에 있는 반면 혜성은 17 광분 이내에 있다. 처음으로 토성 궤도 너머 거리에서 발견되었던 C/2017 K2는 태양계 안쪽을 향해 날아오고 있으며, 머나먼 오르트 구름에서 이번에 처음 날아오는 방문객이다.

Explanation: Heading for its closest approach to the Sun, or perihelion, on December 19 comet C/2017 K2 (PanSTARRS) remains a sight for telescopic observers as it sweeps through planet Earth’s skies in the constellation Scorpius. The comet currently sports a greenish coma, long whitish dust tail, and short ion tail in this deep image from August 18. The 2×3 degree wide field of view includes part of the dusty nebula IC 4592 reflecting blue starlight. Also known as the Blue Horsehead Nebula, IC 4592 is about 400 light-years distant while the comet is just under 17 light-minutes away. First spotted at a distance well beyond the orbit of Saturn C/2017 K2 is on its maiden voyage to the inner solar system, a pristine visitor from the remote Oort cloud.
