블루문 나무 (Blue Moon Tree)

이런 절묘한 배치는 블루문일 때만 가능할까? 물론 이 사진은 블루문일 때 촬영한 것이지만 꼭 그런 것은 아니다. 보름달이 같은 한 달 동안 두 번 떠오를 때를 — 블루문이라고 정의하며 — 지난 1월 배경의 나무의 둥글게 휘어진 모습 너머로 겹쳐 보이는 배경의 달의 모습을 한 장의 사진에 재빨리 촬영했다. 아쉽게도 이 때 당시에는 뾰족한 울타리 위나 진득한 진흙 위에 카메라를 오랫동안 고정시킬 만한 방법이 없었다. 오크 나무의 둥근 나뭇가지는 미국 캘리포니아, 나이츠 페리의 헝가리 소들에 의해 이전에 만들어진 모습이다. 이 기발한 달과 나무의 조우는 다른 때에도 보름달이 떠있으면 언제든 충분한 계획과 시간만 있다면 찍을 수 있다. 이번주 주말 또 다른 블루문이 찾아오는데, 그 때가 기회가 될 수 있다. 2018년 찾아온 이번 두 번째 블루문은 즉 이번달이 블루문이 뜨는 두번째 달이라는 뜻이다. 두 번의 블루문이 한 해 동안 찾아오는 경우는 정말 드문데, 1999년에 있었고 다음은 2037년이 되야 찾아온다.

Explanation: Does an alignment like this occur only once in a blue moon? No, although it was during a blue moon that this single-shot image was taken. During a full moon that happened to be the second of the month — the situation that defines a blue moon — the photographer created the juxtaposition in late January by quickly moving around to find just the right spot to get the background Moon superposed behind the arc of a foreground tree. Unfortunately, in this case, there seemed no other way than getting bogged down in mud and resting the camera on a barbed-wire fence. The arc in the oak tree was previously created by hungry cows in Knight’s Ferry, California, USA. Quirky Moon-tree juxtapositions like this can be created during any full moon though, given enough planning and time. Another opportunity will arise this weekend, coincidently during another blue moon. Then, the second blue moon in 2018 will occur, meaning that for the second month this year, two full moons will appear during a single month (moon-th). Double blue-moon years are relatively rare, with the last occurring in 1999, and the next in 2037.
