우리은하의 카시오페이아자리에는 심장과 영혼이 있을까? 아마 그렇지는 않을 것이다. 하지만 각각 심장과 영혼이라는 별명이 붙은 밝은 두 개의 발광 성운을 찾을 수 있다. 공식적으로 IC 1805라고 명명된 심장 성운은 위 사진 속 오른쪽 아래에서 볼 수 있으며 그 모습은 전형적인 하트 표시와 비슷하다. 영혼 성운의 정식 명칭은 IC 1871이고 사진 속 왼쪽 위에서ㅓ 볼 수 있다. 두 성운 모두 노란색으로 표현된 황에서 나오는 빛과 푸르게 표현된 산소에서 나오는 빛을 품고 있다. 여러 개의 별들로 이루어진 산개 성단들을 성단의 가운데 근처에서 볼 수 있다. 이 성운들에서 출발한 빛은 우리에게 오기까지 6,000년 정도 걸리며 이 곳은 거의 300 광년 크기로 펼쳐져있다. 심장과 영혼성운에서 찾을 수 있는 별과 성단에 대한 연구를 통해 무거운 별이 어떻게 만들어지고 그들의 주변 환경에 어떻게 영향을 주는지를 관심을 두고 알아내고 있다.

Explanation: Is the heart and soul of our Galaxy located in Cassiopeia? Possibly not, but that is where two bright emission nebulas nicknamed Heart and Soul can be found. The Heart Nebula, officially dubbed IC 1805 and visible in the featured image on the bottom right, has a shape reminiscent of a classical heart symbol. The Soul Nebulais officially designated IC 1871 and is visible on the upper left. Both nebulas shine brightly in the red light of energized hydrogen. Also shown in this three-color montage is light emitted from sulfur, shown in yellow, and oxygen, shown in blue. Several young open clusters of stars are visible near the nebula centers. Light takes about 6,000 years to reach us from these nebulas, which together span roughly 300 light years. Studies of stars and clusters like those found in the Heart and Soul Nebulas have focused on how massive stars form and how they affect their environment.
