태양에 무슨 일이 벌어진걸까? 2일 전, 남아메리카 일부 지역에서는 달에 의해 태양 일부가 가려지는 부분 일식이 벌어졌다. 위 사진은 아르헨티나 파타고니아 위에서 일부가 가려진 모습의 태양이 저무는 모습을 찍은 것이다. 이 기울어진 사진에서 지구는 오른쪽에 있다. 일식이 벌어지는 동안 달은 지구와 태양 사이를 움직인다. 보기에는 인상적인 모습이지만, 두꺼운 구름에 의해 하늘이 어두워지는 것에 비해서 부분 일식에 의해 주변이 어두워지는 것은 비교적 덜 느껴졌다. 약 2주 뒤, 남아메리카 전체와 북아메리카 일부는 지구가 달과 지구 사이로 완벽하게 지나가게 되는 개기 월식을 보게 된다. 2년 뒤, 북아메리카를 가로질러 개기 일식이 벌어진다.

Explanation: What’s happened to the Sun? Two days ago, parts of South America were treated to a partial solar eclipse — where the Moon blocked out part of the Sun. The featured image shows an image of the partially eclipsed Sun through clouds as it was setting over Pata g onia, Argentina. In the tilted image, Earth is toward the right. During the eclipse, the Moon moved partly between Earth and the Sun. Although a visually impressive sight, the slight dimming of surroundings during this partial eclipse was less noticeable than dimming created by a thick cloud. In about two weeks, all of South America and part of North America will experience a total lunar eclipse — where the Earth moves completely between the Moon and the Sun. In about two years, a total solar eclipse will cross North America.
