오리온의 성간 구름 (The Interstellar Clouds of Orion)

오리온자리는 단지 별 세 개가 쭈르륵 놓여진 곳이 아니다. 그 방향의 우주를 바라보면 아주 인상적인 성운들이 가득하다. 아주 잘 알려진 밤하늘 영역을 더 잘 담기 위해 지난 1월, 2월 그리고 3월에 걸쳐 새로운 장 노출 사진을 담았다. 23시간 동안 카메라 촬영을 거쳐 몇 시간 동안 후보정을 통해 달의  각지름의 40배에 달하는 영역에서 수소, 산소 그리고 황의 빛을 표현했다. 아주 다양한 세밀한 모습들을 볼 수 있으며 사진의 가운데 오른쪽에 붉은 주황빛으로 펼쳐진 호 버나드의 고리가 특히 우리의 눈을 사로잡는다. 사진 가운데 왼족에 있는 거대한 주황빛 성운은 장미 성운이 아니다 — 이는 더 크지만 잘 알려지지 않은 메시아 고리다. 장미 성운은 사진 아래에서 볼 수 있는 밝은 주황색, 푸른색 그리고 하얀색의 성운이다. 사진 왼쪽 가운데에 있는 밝은 주황색 별은 베텔기우스이고 오른쪽 위에 있는 밝은 푸른 별은 리겔이다. 오리온의 허리띠를 이루는 유명한 세 개의 별은 이 복잡한 사진 속에서 찾기 쉽지 않지만 세심한 눈으로 찾아보면 사진 오른쪽에서 찾을 수 있다.

Explanation: The constellation of Orion is much more than three stars in a row. It is a direction in space that is richwith impressive nebulas. To better appreciate this well-known swath of sky, a new long exposure imagewas taken over several clear nights in January, February and March. After 23 hours of camera time and untold hours of image processing, the featured collage in the light of hydrogen, oxygen, and sulfurwas produced spanning over 40 times the angular diameterof the Moon. Of the many interesting details that have become visible, one that particularly draws the eye is Barnard’s Loop, the bright red orange arc just to the right of the image center. The Rosette Nebula is notthe giant orange nebula just to the left of the image center — that is larger but lesser known nebula known as the Meissa Ring. The Rosette Nebulaisvisible, though: it is the bright orange, blue and white nebula near the image bottom. The bright orange star just left of the frame center is Betelgeuse, while the bright blue star on the upper right is Rigel. About those famous three starsthat cross the belt of Orion the Hunter— in this busy frame they can be hard to locate, but a discerning eyewill find them just to the right of the image center.
