울룰루 뒤에서 무슨 일이 벌어지는걸까? 유네스코 세계 문화 유산 울룰루는 오스트레일리아 중부에 있는 거의 평평하고 가파르게 솟아있는 아주 거대한 350미터 높이의 산이다. 사암으로 구성된 울룰루는 지난 3억 년에 걸쳐 부드러운 바위가 풍화를 겪으면서 느리게 형성되었다. 이 사진의 배경에는 5월 중순 촬영한 번개가 치는 모습이 담겨있다. 그리고 울룰루와 번개 폭풍보다 더 멀리 오리온자리 방향의 별들로 가득찬 하늘이함께 담겼다. 울룰루 지역은 22,000년 넘게 인류의 거주지였다. 지역 토착 원주민들은 현대의 오리온자리를 이루는 별들이 언제 밤하늘에 처음 떠오르기 시작하는지를 알고 있었고, 그것을 통해 번개 폭풍을 동반하는 뜨거운 계절이 곧 시작될 것이란 걸 알 수 있었다.

A United Nations World Heritage Site, Uluru is an extraordinary 350-meter high mountain in central Australia that rises sharply from nearly flat surroundings. Composed of sandstone, Uluru has slowly formed over the past 300 million years as softer rock eroded away. In the background of the featured image taken in mid-May, a raging thunderstorm is visible. Far behind both Uluru and the thunderstorm is a star-filled sky highlighted by the constellation of Orion. The Uluru region has been a home to humans for over 22,000 years. Local indigenous people have long noted that when the stars that compose the modern constellation of Orion first appear in the night sky, a hot season involving lightning storms will soon be arriving.
