이탈리아에 떠오른 태양에 드리운 녹색 빛 (Distorted Green Flash Sunset over Italy)

이 날의 아침 햇살은 이상했다. 우선, 원래는 둥근 태양이 여러 겹으로 일그러진 모습으로 나타났다. 뿐만 아니라, 겹겹이 쌓인 층 중에 하나는 독특하게도 녹색 빛이었다. 물론 태양 자체는 문제가 없었다. 그 독특한 모습은 순전히 지구 대기가 빛을 굴절시키면서 만들어진 것이다. 지구 대기층이 평소에 비해 따듯해지면, 태양이 겹겹이 쌓인 형체는 일그러지고 혹은 아주 여러개로 보이곤 한다. 이 현상이 가장 두드러질 때는 태양이 떠오르거나 지는 중에 지평선 위로 여러 고도에 걸쳐 역전층들이 여러개 형성되어있을 때이다. 태양의 다양한 색깔에 따라 굴절되는 정도가 확연하게 다르기 때문에, 이 멋진 작품의 맨 위에는 인상깊은 녹색빛으로 빛나는 녹색 섬광 현상의 모습이 담겨있다. 이 사진은 지난 2월 이탈리아 포르토 베네레에서 성 피에트로 성당을 배경으로 촬영한 것이다.

Explanation: This was one strange sunset. For one thing, the typically round Sun appeared distorted, geometrically, and multiply layered. For another, some of these layers appeared unusually green. The Sun, of course, was just fine — its odd appearance was caused entirely by its light refracting in the Earth’s atmosphere. When layers of the Earth’s atmosphere are unusually warm, layers of the Sun may appear distorted or even seen multiple times. The effect is most strong nearest sunrise and sunset when terrestrial inversion layers occupy distinct altitudes above the horizon. Different colors of the Sun may also become deflected by significantly different amounts, so that the uppermost superior image may appear momentarily green — a phenomenon known as a green flash.
