카메라 오리온 (Camera Orion)

이 별자리를 알아보겠는가? 하늘에서 가장 알아보기 쉬운 별들이 모여있지만 맨눈으로 오리온을 보면 카메라로 바라본 이 오리온의 모습만큼 이렇게까지 알록달록해보이지는 않는다. 20 장의 사진을 디지털 합성해서 만든 이 모자이크 사진에는 온도가 낮은 적색거성 베텔기우스가 아주 강렬한 주황빛을 띄며 왼쪽 위에 자리하고 있다. 오리온의 뜨겁고 푸른 별 초거성 리겔이 베텔기우스와 균형을 맞춰 오른쪽 아래에 자리하고 있고, 오른쪽 위의 벨라트릭스와 나란하게 놓인 오리온의 허리띠를 이루는 세 개의 별들은 모두 대략 1,500 광년 거리에 놓여있으며, 이들은 이 별자리 부근에서 잘 연구된 성간 구름 속에서 태어났다. 오리온의 허리띠 바로 아래 붉고 뿌옇게 보이는 얼룩은 아주 익숙한 모습의 — 별들이 태어나는 오리온 성운이다. 그리고 맨눈으로는 겨우 보이지만 이 카메라로 찍은 사진에서는 선명한 — 오리온의 허리띠와 오리온 성운을 에워싸고 있는 거대한 가스 발광 성운으로 약 100년 전 오리온의 사진을 찍은 E. Explanation: Do you recognize this constellation? Although it is one of the most recognizable star groupings on the sky, Orion’s icons don’t look quite as colorful to the eye as they do to a camera. In this 20-image digitally-composed mosaic, cool red giant Betelgeuse takes on a strong orange tint as the brightest star at the upper left. Orion’s hot blue stars are numerous, with supergiant Rigel balancing Betelgeuse at the lower right, and Bellatrix at the upper right Lined up in Orion’s belt are three stars all about 1,500 light-years away, born from the constellation’s well-studied interstellar clouds. Below Orion’s belt a reddish and fuzzy patch that might also look familiar — the stellar nursery known as Orion’s Nebula. Finally, just barely visible to the unaided eye but quite striking here by camera is Barnard’s Loop — a huge gaseous emission nebula surrounding Orion’s Belt and Nebula discovered over 100 years ago by the pioneering Orion photographer E. E. Barnard.
