토끼자리 R: 뱀파이어의 별 (R Leporis: A Vampire’s Star)

힌드의 크림슨 별로도 더 잘 알려진 토끼자리 R 별은 지구의 밤하늘에서 볼 수 있는 흔치 않은 별이다. 이 별은 굉장히 붉게 빛난다. 19세기 영국의 천문학자 존 러셀 힌드에 의해 발견된 별로, 당시 그는 망원경을 통해 “…까만 배경에 피 한 방울이 떨어져있는 것 같다”라고 기록했다. 토끼자리 방향으로 1,360 광년 거리에 자리하고 있는 이 별은 미라형 변광성으로 약 14개월에 걸쳐 밝기가 변하는 별이다. 현재 토끼자리 R 별은 굉장히 많은 탄소를 포함하고 있는 진화된 거성인 탄소 별로 알려져있다. 탄소 별 안의 굉장히 많은 탄소들은 별의 핵이 거의 죽어가면서 일으킨 헬륨 핵융합에 의해 별의 외곽으로 끌어올려진 것으로 생각된다. 이렇게 끌어올려진 결과 CO, CH, CN 그리고 C2와 같은 간단한 탄소 분자들이 풍성해진다. 이것이 사실이라면 온도가 낮아진 별은 대부분 붉은 적외선 영역에서 빛을 내며, 탄소 분자에 의해 푸른 빛은 많이 흡수되기 때문에 이러한 별들은 예외적으로 아주 붉은 빛으로 보이게 된다. 토끼자리 R 별은 강한 항성풍으로 주변의 성간 물질로 탄소가 풍성한 항성 대기 물질을 잃어버리고 있으며, 행성상 성운으로 변해가는 중이다. 오! lanation: Better known as Hind’s Crimson Star, R Leporis is a rare star in planet Earth’s night sky. It’s also a shocking shade of red. The star’s discoverer, 19th century English astronomer John Russell Hind, reported that it appeared in a telescope “… like a drop of blood on a black field.” Located 1,360 light-years away in the constellation Lepus the star is a Mira-type variable, changing its brightness over a period of about 14 months. R Leporis is now recognized as a carbon star, a very cool and highly evolved red giant with an extreme abundance of carbon. Extra carbon in carbon stars is created by helium fusion near the dying stellar core and dredged up into the stars’ outer layers. The dredge-up results in an overabundance of simple carbon molecules, like CO, CH, CN, and C2. While it’s true that cool stars radiate most of their energy in red and infrared light, the carbon molecules strongly absorb what little blue light is left and give carbon stars an exceptionally deep red color. R Leporis is losing its carbon-rich atmosphere into the surrounding interstellar material through a strong stellar wind though, and could be near the transition to a planetary nebula.
