지난 2015년 5월 23일 0200 UT에 지구에서 망원경으로 바라본 토성과 고리의 환상적인 모습이다. 물론 충이란 지구의 하늘에서 태양의 정반대 방향에 놓인 것을 의미한다. 하룻밤 내내 충 근처에 놓인 토성은 그 해 가장 밝고 가깝다. 태양-지구-토성이 일직선 상에 놓였을 때 몇시간 정도 촬영해서 얻은 이 선명한 사진에서 토성의 고리가 밝게 빛나는 젤리거 현상을 확인할 수 있다. 고리를 이루고 있는 얼음 입자들이 태양빛을 바로 반사하면서 그림자를 그리지 않고 모두 지구를 향해 뒤로 산란시킨 결과, 극적으로 밝게 빛나는 고리를 그리게 된다. 토성은 현재 밤하늘에서 바로 궁수자리의 밝은 알파 별 안타레스 주변에 놓여있다.
Explanation: Telescopic observers on Earth have been treated to spectacular views of Saturn lately as the ringed planet reached its 2015 opposition on May 23 at 0200 UT. Of course opposition means opposite the Sun in Earth’s sky. So near opposition Saturn is up all night, at its closest and brightest for the year. These sharp images taken within hours of the Sun-Earth-Saturn alignment also show the strong brightening of Saturn’s rings known as the opposition surge or the Seeliger Effect. Directly illuminated, the ring’s icy particles cast no shadows and strongly backscatter sunlight toward planet Earth, creating the dramatic surge in brightness. Saturn currently stands in the sky not far from bright Antares, alpha star of the constellation Sagittarius.
