햇빛이 드리우다(Embraced by Sunlight)

금성은 1월 29일 하늘에서 가장 밝게 보이는 행성이었지만 달에 비해서는 겉보기 크기가 겨우 1/30뿐이었다. 하지만 그믐달과 함께 태양이 떠오르기 전 남동쪽 지평선 위에서 원반 전체의 12퍼센트가 빛나는 모습으로 등장했다. 그 둘의 비슷하게 태양 빛이 얇게 비춰지는 모습이 위 두 장의 사진에 함께 담겼다. 각각 다른 배율로 촬영했기 때문에 각 사진은 작은 망원경으로 영상으로 촬영한 뒤 각 프레임을 합쳐서 만들었다. 금성은 내행성으로 584일 주기로 저녁 하늘에서 새볔 하늘까지 그리고 다시 반대로 돌아가면서 달과 비슷한 위상 변화를 겪는다. 물론 달이 위상 변화를 한 바퀴 완벽하게 도는 전체 삭망월은 약 29.5일이다.

Explanation: Even though Venus (left) was the brightest planet in the sky it was less than 1/30th the apparent size of the Moon on January 29. But as both rose before the Sun they shared a crescent phase, and for a moment their visible disks were each about 12 percent illuminated as they stood above the southeastern horizon. The similar sunlit crescents were captured in these two separate images. Made at different magnifications, each panel is a composite of stacked video frames taken with a small telescope. Venus goes through a range of phases like the Moon as the inner planet wanders from evening sky to morning sky and back again with a period of 584 days. Of course the Moon completes its own cycle of phases, a full lunation, in about 29.5 days.
