혜성 ZTF: 궤도 평면 통과(Comet ZTF: Orbital Plane Crossing)

현재 북쪽 밤하늘에서 빛나고 있는 혜성 C/2022 E3 ZTF를 미국 캘리포니아 준 레이크의 어두운 하늘에서 망원경을 통해 사진으로 담았다. 물론 혜성 ZTF는 2월 1일 지구에 가장 가까운 지점으로 접근하면서 최근 며칠 사이 더 밝아지고 있다. 하지만 1월 23일에 포착한 이 사진에서 행성 지구는 장주기 혜성 ZTF의 궤도 평면을 통과했다. 혜성의 넓고 하얀 먼지 꼬리가 여전히 휘어져있고 혜성 ZTF가 궤도를 도는 동안 태양에서 멀어지는 방향으로 뻗어나간다. 궤도 평면을 통과하면서 바라봤기 때문에 바깥으로 불려나간 먼지 꼬리의 물질이 혜성의 녹색빛을 띠는 코마 양 옆에 나타났다. 그래서 혜성 ZTF가 (왼쪽) 역방향 꼬리를 갖고 있는 것처럼 보인다. 태양 활동으로 인해 발생한 혜성의 더 가느다란 이온 꼬리는 거의 3도 너비의 이 사진을 가로질러 오른쪽 방향으로 혜성 코마에서 대각선 방향으로 뻗어나간다.

Explanation: The current darling of the northern night, Comet C/2022 E3 ZTF is captured in this telescopic image from a dark sky location at June Lake, California, USA. Of course Comet ZTF has been growing brighter in recent days, headed for its closest approach to Earth on February 1. But this view was recorded on January 23, very close to the time planet Earth crossed the orbital plane of long-period Comet ZTF. The comet’s broad, whitish dust tail is still curved and fanned out away from the Sun as Comet ZTF sweeps along its orbit. Due to perspective near the orbital plane crossing, components of the fanned out dust tail appear on both sides of the comet’s green tinted coma though, to lend Comet ZTF a visually striking (left) anti-tail. Buffeted by solar activity the comet’s narrower ion tail also streams away from the coma diagonally to the right, across the nearly three degree wide field of view.
