화성의 악어 등 암석(The Gator-Back Rocks of Mars)

화성, 게일 크레이터, 마운트 샤프의 산기슭 경사에는 바람에 불려나가 만들어진 벤티팩트로 알려진 넓게 경사진 지역이 있다. 그 거친 모습 때문에 악어 등 암석이라고 불리는 이 곳의 마치 비늘로 덮여있는 듯한 모습을 큐리오시티 로버가 3,415 화성일 (2022년 3월 15일)에 마스트캠으로 촬영했다. 이전에 악어 등 암석 위를 운전하면서 로버의 바퀴가 손상된 적이 있기 때문에, 큐리오시티 팀 멤버들은 주변을 돌아서 다른 경로로 로버가 등반하도록 했다. 큐리오시티는 2014년 이후로 게일 크레이터 가운데에 있는 5.5km 높이의 산을 오르고 있다. 이 등반을 통해 튼튼한 로버는 수십 억년 전 화성에 있던 물에 의해 만들어진 층 구조를 탐사할 수 있었다.

Explanation: Wind-sharpened rocks known as ventifacts cover this broad sloping plain in the foot hills of Mount Sharp, Gale crater, Mars. Dubbed gator-back rocks their rugged, scaly appearance is captured in these digitally stitched Mastcam frames from the Curiosity rover on mission sol 3,415 (March 15, 2022). Driving over gator-back rocks before has resulted in damage to the rover’s wheels, so Curiosity team members decided to turn around and take another path to continue the rover’s climb. Curiosity has been on an ascent of Gale crater’s central 5.5 kilometer high mountain since 2014. As it climbs, the durable rover has been able to explore layers shaped by water on Mars billions of years ago.
