히말라야를 덮은 찬란한 해무리 (A Colorful Solar Corona over the Himalayas)

태양 주변에 그려진 알록달록하고 둥근 고리는 무엇일까? 오직 지구에서만 볼 수 있는 해무리가 바로 지금 이 곳에 나타났다. 고리를 닮은 이 모습은 태양 또는 달이 얇은 구름 뒤로 놓여있을 때 보인다. 이 현상은 거의 투명한 구름을 이루고 있는 비슷한 크기를 갖고 있는 물방울들에 의한 양자 역학적인 산란 때문에 발생한다. 여러 다른 색의 빛은 각각 다른 파장을 갖고 있으며, 각각의 색들은 산란되는 정도가 다르다. 이처럼 양자 역학적 산란 현상을 겪은 태양의 해무리는 맨눈으로 볼 수 있다. 이런 종류의 해무리는 지구 대기의 물방울에 의해 태양 주변에서 새어나오는 빛으로 태양 코로나와는 다르다. 아래 배경에는 그 유명한 히말라야 산맥의 암마 다블람 (어머니의 목걸이) 봉우리가 솟아있다.

Explanation: What are those colorful rings around the Sun? A corona visible only to Earth observers in the right place at the right time. Rings like this will sometimes appear when the Sun or Moon is seen through thin clouds. The effect is created by the quantum mechanical diffraction of light around individual, similarly-sized water droplets in an intervening but mostly-transparent cloud. Since light of different colors has different wavelengths, each color diffracts differently. Solar Coronae are one of the few quantum color effects that can be easily seen with the unaided eye. This type of solar corona is a visual effect due to water in Earth’s atmosphere and is altogether different from the solar corona that exists continually around the Sun — and stands out during a total solar eclipse.
