태양은 항상 같은 방향에서 떠오를까? 그렇지 않다. 달이 지나면서 태양이 떠오르는 방향도 변한다. 위 사진은 캐나다, 앨버타, 에드몬튼의 도시에서 2021년 매달 아침 태양이 떠오르는 모습을 담은 것이다. 카메라는 항상 동쪽을 향한 채, 북쪽을 왼쪽에 남쪽을 오른쪽에 두고 촬영했다. 사진을 모아 만든 영상에서 볼 수 있듯이 가장 위쪽의 사진은 2020년 12월 촬영한 것이고, 가장 아래쪽 사진은 2021년 12월 촬영해, 총 13장의 사진을 모았다. 태양이 일반적으로 항상 동쪽에서 떠오르기는 하지만 12월 동지에는 동쪽에서 가장 남쪽으로 먼 곳에서 떠오른다. 그리고 6월 하지에는 동쪽에서 가장 북쪽으로 먼 곳에서 떠오른다. 많은 나라에서 12월 동지는 북반구에서 겨울이 처음 시작되는 날로 계절이 변하는 첫 번째 날로 여긴다. 겨울 동안 지구의 표면과 대기권으로 들어오는 태양 빛의 열기와 에너지가 가장 적어지면서 겨울은 1년 중 가장 추운 계절이 된다.
Explanation: Does the Sun always rise in the same direction? No. As the months change, the direction toward the rising Sun changes, too. The featured image shows the direction of sunrise every month during 2021 as seen from the city of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. The camera in the image is always facing due east, with north toward the left and south toward the right. As shown in an accompanying video, the top image was taken in 2020 December, while the bottom image was captured in 2021 December, making 13 images in total. Although the Sun always rises in the east in general, it rises furthest to the south of east near the December solstice, and furthest north of east near the June solstice. In many countries, the December Solstice is considered an official change in season: for example the first day of winter in the North. Solar heating and stored energy in the Earth’s surface and atmosphere are near their lowest during winter, making the winter season the coldest of the year.
