IC 2944: 달리는 닭 성운 (IC 2944: The Running Chicken Nebula)

누군가에겐 이 장면은 하늘을 가로질러 거대한 닭이 달리는 것처럼 보일 것이다. 또 다른 누군가에게는 별이 탄생하는 가스로 자욱한 성운으로 보일 것이다. IC 2944로 불리는 달리는 닭 성운은 약 100 광년 크기로 센타우르스자리 방향으로 약 6,000 광년 거리에 떨어져있다. 위 사진은 최근 12시간 노출로 담아내 과학적으로 색을 입힌 사진이다. 성단 콜린더 249가 성운의 달아오른 가스 속에 품어져 있는 모습을 볼 수 있다. 여기서는 알아보기 어렵지만 몇개의 어두운 분자 구름들이 성운 속에서 영역을 구분하고 있다.

Explanation: To some, it looks like a giantchicken running across the sky. To others, it looks like a gaseous nebula where star formation takes place. Cataloged as IC 2944, the Running Chicken Nebula spans about 100 light years and lies about 6,000 light years away toward the constellation of the Centaur (Centaurus). The featured image, shown in scientifically assigned colors, was captured recently in a 12-hour exposure. The star cluster Collinder249 is visible embedded in the nebula’s glowing gas. Although difficult to discern here, several dark molecular clouds with distinct shapes can be found inside the nebula.
