실제로 우주적인 스케일의 장엄한 M100은 아주 대표적인 나선팔이 뚜렷한 나선 은하다. 이 은하는 우리은하와 비슷하게 천억개가 넘는 별들로 이루어진 나선팔을 갖고 있는 은하다. 처녀자리 은하단의 가장 밝은 멤버 중 하나인 M100 (또는 NGC 4321)은 머리털자리 방향으로 5600만 광년 거리에 있다. 이 허블 우주 망원경이 광시야 카메라 3으로 찍은 M100의 사진은 밝고 푸른 성단과 복잡하게 휘감겨있는 먼지 띠를 두드러지게 보여주며 이 은하의 종류를 더 뚜렷하게 보여준다. Explanation: Majestic on a truly cosmic scale, M100 is appropriately known as a grand design spiral galaxy. It is a large galaxy of over 100 billion stars with well-defined spiral arms that is similar to our own Milky Way Galaxy. One of the brightest members of the Virgo Cluster of galaxies, M100 (alias NGC 4321) is 56 million light-years distant toward the constellation of Berenice’s Hair (Coma Berenices). This Hubble Space Telescope image of M100 was taken with the Wide Field Camera 3 and accentuates bright blue star clusters and intricate winding dust lanes which are hallmarks of this class of galaxies. Studies of variable stars in M100 have played an important role in determining the size and age of the Universe.
