플레이아데스 성단을 본 적 있는가? 아마도 이렇게 먼지로 자욱한 모습은 보지 못했을 것이다. 아마 하늘에서 가장 유명한 이 성단 플레이아데스에서 가장 밝은 별은 쌍안경도 없이 도시 불빛으로 채워진하늘에서도 볼 수 있다. 어두운 장소에서 긴 노출을 주면, 플레이아데스성단을 에워싸고 있는 먼지도 분명하게 확인할 수 있다. 위 노출사진은 12시간이 넘게 노출을 통해 하늘에서 보름달의 몇 배에 달하는 영역을 담은 것이다. 일곱 공주또는 M45로도 알려진 플레이아데스는 황소자리방향으로 약 400 광년 거리에 떨어져 있다.현대적으로 뒤튼보편적인 전설에 따르면 원래 별 하나가 더 밝았을 때 성단의 이름이 지어졌지만, 이제는 맨눈으로 볼 수 있는 별은 여섯개만 남았다고 한다. 하지만 실제 눈으로 볼 수 있는 플레이아데스의 별의 수는 일곱개보다 더 많거나 적은데, 이는 관측하는 사람이 있는 주변 하늘의 맑은 정도와 어두운 정도에 따라 다르다.
Explanation: Have you ever seen the Pleiades star cluster? Even if you have, you probably have never seen it as dusty as this. Perhaps the most famous star cluster on the sky, the bright stars of the Pleiades can be seen without binoculars from even the depths of a light-polluted city. With a long exposure from a dark location, though, the dust cloud surrounding the Pleiadesstar cluster becomes very evident. The featured exposure took over 12 hours and covers a sky area several times the size of the full moon. Also known as the Seven Sisters and M45, the Pleiades lies about 400 light years away toward the constellation of the Bull (Taurus). A common legend with a modern twist is that one of the brighter stars faded since the cluster was named, leaving only six stars visible to the unaided eye. The actual number of Pleiades stars visible, however, may be more or less than seven, depending on the darkness of the surrounding sky and the clarity of the observer’s eyesight.
