소용돌이 은하는 전형적인 나선 은하다. 겨우 3천 만 광년 거리에 떨어져 6만 광년 꽉 차게 펼쳐진 M51는 NGC 5194로도 알려져있으며 하늘에서 가장 밝고 그림 같은 은하 중 하나다. 위 사진은 지구 궤도를 돌고 있는 허블 우주 망원경으로 여러 다란 색깔로 촬영한 사진을 디지털 합성한 것으로, 아주 세밀한 모습을 담고있다. 사냥개자리에서도 이 소용돌이를 쌍안경으로도 볼 수 있다. Explanation: The Whirlpool Galaxy is a classic spiral galaxy. At only 30 million light years distant and fully 60 thousand light years across, M51, also known as NGC 5194, is one of the brightest and most picturesque galaxies on the sky. The featured image is a digital combination of images taken in different colors by the Earth-orbiting Hubble Space Telescope, highlighting many sharp features. Anyone with a good pair of binoculars, however, can see this Whirlpool toward the constellation of the Hunting Dogs (Canes Venatici). M51 is a spiral galaxy of type Sc and is the dominant member of a whole group of galaxies. Astronomers speculate that M51‘s spiral structure is primarily due to its gravitational interaction with the smaller galaxy on the image left.
