대 칠면조 성운(The Great Turkey Nebula)

놀라울 정도로 오리온 대성운을 연상시키는 이 대 칠면조 성운이 화면을 가득 채우고 있다. 물론 이것은 오리온 성운은 우리에게 가장 가깝고 거대한 별들의 산실로 겨우 1,500 광년 거리에 떨어진 거대한 분자 구름의 가장자리에서 찾을 수 있다. M42로도 알려진 오리온 성운은 현재 지구에서 저녁 하늘에 떠오르는 사냥꾼 오리온의 칼에서 맨눈으로도 볼 수 있는 “별”이다. 새롭게 태어난 별들의 성단에서 불어나오는 항성풍에 의해 오리온 성운이 불려나가며 만들어진 줄기와 빈 공간이 이 망원경으로 담은 사진 속에 익숙한 모습으로 담겨있다. 오리온 성운과 비슷한 크기의 대 칠면조 성운은 약 13 광년 크기로 생각된다. 모두 안전하고 무탈하게 지내길. 

Explanation: Surprisingly reminiscent of The Great Nebula in Orion, The Great Turkey Nebula spans this creative field of view. Of course if it were the Orion Nebula it would be our closest large stellar nursery, found at the edge of a large molecular cloud a mere 1,500 light-years away. Also known as M42, the Orion Nebula is visible to the eye as the middle “star” in the sword of Orion the Hunter, a constellation now rising in planet Earth’s evening skies. Stellar winds from clusters of newborn stars scattered throughout the Orion Nebula sculpt its ridges and cavities seen in familiar in telescopic images. Similar in size to the Orion Nebula, this Great Turkey Nebula was imagined to be about 13 light-years across. Stay safe and well.
